Burger Week: Tiara Cafe's Cheeseburger, a Classic Done Right

Tiara Cafe
127 W. 9th Street
Los Angeles, CA 90014

What I ordered: Cheeseburger
Total: $9-11.00
Thoughts: A juicy patty of the perfect thickness, sweet pickles, cheese, fresh lettuce, tomatoes housed between a toasted sesame bun and topped off with a thousand island dressing. Oh and a cone filled with fries - all for you.
Verdict: A classic cheeseburger done right!

Styling for Spring Guide: Downtown Night Out

This vintage Tayna dress from Virgo looked dauntingly shapeless when hanging on the racks, but fashion stylist Bettina Bati was determined to show our readers that there is nothing to fear. When she tried it on, it turned out to be a figure-flattering, girly dress. So much so that we thought it would make for the perfect night out look! With the weather warming up for summer, a mini dress like this is ideal for the evening. And it's always key to have a balanced outfit, that's why the long sleeves are a perfect match to the length of the dress. The matching of the polka-dotted collar and floral prints is also very on-trend and aesthetically interesting. With the addition of a Charlie Chaplin bowler hat, necklaces, and your choice of shoes (we selected black gladiator sandals, grey heels, or black heels), you're ready to take the downtown night scene by storm.

Get the look:
1. Zuma black sandals, FOREVER SHOES, $20
2. Bowler hat, VIRGO, $25
3. Presley heels, FOREVER SHOES, $25
4. Mustache necklace, VIRGO, $22
5. Cross necklace, VIRGO, $15
6. Vintage Tayna dress, VIRGO, $50
7. Finger ring, VIRGO, $35
8. Jeffrey Campbell shoes, VIRGO, $130

Burger Week: Market Restaurant's Turkey Burger & Salmon Burger

Market Restaurant at the Cooper Building
860 S. Los Angeles St.
Los Angeles, CA 90014

What we ordered: Turkey Burger
Total: $9.00
Thoughts: The turkey burger is such a great healthy alternative to beef burgers. It's less fatty, oily, and even messy. Though it's healthier, the turkey patty itself didn't lose its flavor. The cheddar cheese, pickles and secret sauce in the burger was a great complement. The ciabatta bread was fresh, also a great alternative to the usual sesame buns.
Verdict: Loved it!

What we ordered: Salmon Burger
Total: $9.00
Thoughts: Another wonderful, healthy alternative to beef burgers, the salmon burger was moist and tasty. The ciabatta bread was dressed in a yogurt sauce which was great paired with the fish. There were also mini, fried onion rings that gave a nice crunch against the soft fish. Again, the ciabatta was a favorite!
Verdict: Surprisingly good and everyone should try it at least once!

Burger Week: Angelique Cafe's Dijon Burger

Angelique Cafe
840 S. Spring St.
Los Angeles, CA 90014

What I ordered: Dijon Burger
Total: $12.50
Thoughts: In the median of Main and Spring Streets, Angelique Cafe sits snuggly on its french inspired, quaint island. The decor inside is reminiscent of a Parisian cafe that a traveler would nonchalantly stumble into. This charming experience is enhanced by their delicious French-inspired Dijon Burger. The dijon sauce and the caramelized onion and murshrooms take the lead in this dish. The sauce is creamy and decadent and goes perfectly with the thick patty. The sesame bun is soft and soaks up[ the leftover sauce like a sponge, although it would be interesting to try the burger with a brioche bun. Lastly, a whole plate of fries is served as your side dish.
Verdict: Delicious, but come hungry because the portions are huge.

Styling for Spring Guide: Vintage Party Outfit

For me, going to special events like birthday parties, bridal showers or even just brunch with the girls is a fun opportunity to experiement with my clothes and try something new. The same cookie-cutter outfits (shiny leggings and a loose top are my go-to) can get mundane. So that's why this aqua-blue, flowy vintage dress that fashion stylist Bettina Bati put together at Haute Olive Boutique is such a breath of fresh air! The color and texture of the dress is so great for Spring/Summer - it stands out and is comfortable. The draping neckline is also a subtle sexy touch. And it's also a one-of-a-kind dress! It was tweaked for a modern fit by the boutique's owner. This by the way, is another great plus about vintage shopping which is that you'll find unique pieces with a history. So, here are some pointers to remember when shopping for this style: bright colors, subtlle sexy/feminine accents, and accessories. Also, most importantly, remember that sometimes girls just want to have fun!

1. Van Eli heels, HAUTE OLIVE, $25
2. Vintage original dress, HAUTE OLIVE, $56
3. Vintage white belt, HAUTE OLIVE, $10
4. Vintage white bracelet, HAUTE OLIVE, $15
5. Vintage silver purse, HAUTE OLIVE, $28
6. System Turqoise pumps, FOREVER SHOES, $23

Burger Week: L'Angolo Cafe's Kobe Burger

L'Angolo Cafe
What I ordered: Kobe Burger, comes with a side of fries
Total: $11
Thoughts: The flame-broiled homemade, 7 oz kobe patty was juicy and flavorful. The bun was very fluffy and lightweight, which let the patty take the spotlight. The meat was complemented with provolone cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, and I believe thousand island dressing.
Verdict: The burger delivered what it promised: a flame-broiled kobe burger so hot-off-the-grill that it is reminiscent of laid-back summer bbqs.

Restoration Underway at the Huntington Hotel

Over the past several years, the Huntington Hotel has been one of the more troubled properties in Downtown, plagued by crime and ownership limbo. Now, the Huntington Hotel is back on track and is going through a comprehensive renovation to restore the building. The project will continue to provide housing to low-income individuals.

Rick Espinoza, the construction’s Project Manager, and his team have been working tirelessly for the past 6 months to get this building in shape and ready to open by June of this year.
Before

After - walls repainted, floors refurbished, and windows replaced

Espinoza said that refurbishing a 100-year-old building has had its challenges, but the building has a well-built structure which has made his task a lot easier. So far, they have updated the plumbing systems and redesigned the bathrooms to include new sinks, toilets, and showers.

New and fully restored bathroom

Security upgraded with bars on the windows
The electricity throughout the whole building also has been updated. The lights are now energy efficient with a timer and light sensors. The walls, which used to be a mucky yellow color, are now repainted with a pristine white color, making each room brighter and more appealing.  Security has also been upgraded; extra bars have been added to the windows. In addition, each room will be equipped with wireless internet. The spacious, commercial areas on the first floor of the building have also been renovated for new tenants to set up shop and bring in business to the Fashion District.

A finished, furnished room with interior decor

We look forward to see the finished product in June!

Designer Spotlight: Solstiss

A piece of the Royal wedding is in LA! Thanks to French lace maker, Solstiss, who contributed to Kate Middleton's wedding gown, has a showroom in the LA Fashion District's California Market Center. Based in Paris, Solstiss is a renown French company that has produced lace fabrics since the 1800s and is now known as the "official partner" of royal weddings. I sat down with the representatives in the LA showroom and found out that this fairy tale opportunity actually originated 55 years ago.

Solstiss's first royal dressing was for Grace Kelly. For her wedding to Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956, designer Helen Rose chose to use Solstiss's best-selling, classic lace design for the dress.

Since then, the dress has been cited as one of the most elegant and best-remembered bridal gowns of all time, and one of the most famous since the mid 20th century. So, when it came for Kate Middleton to chose her dress, she thought of Grace Kelly. As a result, Alexander McQueen (i.e. Sarah Burton), who has been a long time client of Solstiss, immediately thought of using the same lace used for the Princess of Monaco's dress for the Duchess of Cambridge's.

Kate's dress was made with ivory and white satin gazar. The skirt echoed an opening flower, with white satin gazar arches and pleats. The train was close to 6 feet long. The lace appliqué for the bodice and skirt both incorporated hand-cut English lace and French Chantilly lace. For the bodice, individual flowers were hand-cut from 2,000 lace patterns, including Solstiss's design, and hand-engineered onto ivory silk tulle to create a unique and organic design, which incorporated the rose, thistle, daffodil and shamrock.

A close-up of the design
Solstiss's lace designs are truly made through an intricate and artistic process. "This opportunity has been a great recognition for the lace industry and for those in France because they really are artists who are accomplished and highly-trained," said Bernard.

Christophe Machu, Chairman & President of Solstiss
The lace is made on the leavers machine, a machine invented by French mechanic, Joseph-Marie Jacquard in 1804. This machine manipulates all the holes of the perforated cards of the machine to correspond to a type of speck and color of thread which elaborately weaves one after the other, giving birth to incredible designed farbic. Moreover, once the lace comes out of the machine, it is hand-finished by French artisans. These artists meticulously inspect and repair any flaws, a process that can take up to at least 6 weeks, depending on the design and quantity. Luckily, Solstiss has stock pieces of lace already made, so clients can easily just receive it right away. Solstiss can also create custom colors, as they have a variety of 6,000 original drawings available and 30,000 colors available. For Kate's dress, the lace and color was already in their collection.

The pattern used for Kate Middleton's and Grace Kelly's wedding gowns
Solstiss actually didn't know they were dressing for the royal wedding until two weeks before the wedding. "Solstiss did a rush delivery, 15 days [before the wedding] to the Alexander McQueen studio, precisely 25 meters of lace...it was a treasure secret until the ceremony," said Jane Burge, Account Executive.

The secretive aspect of the job is something Solstiss is used to. They design lace for the best fashion houses in the world such as Christian Dior and Dolce & Gabbana. They've even dressed for Vogue's Anna Wintour.

"As for every Haute Couture or Ready to Wear show it is a last minute surprise. You never know in advance...this is the magic of our business," Christophe Machu, Solstiss President stated in a press release.

Here are just two of the many examples of lace designs Solstiss has done for luxury fashion houses.

Christian Dior

Dolce & Gabbana
Solstiss is now and forever part of royal history and I hope that through it's LA showroom, Los Angeles will be remembered as well.

Styling for Spring Guide: Collegiate-Cool Work Look

One of the perks about working in the fashion industry is the luxury of having more creative lax in our work attire. So, when we saw this vintage, 70's-esque, bow-tie blouse at Haute Olive boutique, we knew we wanted to showcase this as a work outfit. Stylist Bettina Bati paired the breezy striped blouse with a crisp, white and navy striped blazer. Mixing two different, yet complementary patterns is one of Spring's biggest trends. The key is to make sure one pattern is smaller than the other. Then, Bettina topped off the look with some neutral bangles and fun sunglassses just for kicks. Putting this whole look together at the vintage store was a breeze which showed that vintage shopping isn't as daunting as it may seem. Though you do have to set aside some patience to sort through the clothes, you will be pleasantly surprised by what you will find!

Designer Spotlight: MadisonPark Collective

The Fireman

The Fireman

The Jagger

The Postman
Having a great pair of trusted pants is one of life's little treasures, which makes MadisonPark Collective a gold mine. I visited their showroom in the Fashion District's Lady Liberty Building and had a personal look at their unique collection of men's and women's apparel. What drew me in was the interesting blend of fabrics, washes, and trims created to design their signature pants. These non-denim, twill pants come in various washes and styles (the Cargo, the Jagger, the Postman), but their most notable one is the Fireman. Literally inspired by fireman pants, MadisonPark Collective has taken these iconic attire into a fashionable, modern level. These pants feature intricate details such as the side buttons to the taping in the back pocket. What's more is that this entire collective is made in LA, which contributes to the local economy.

For my choice, I especially love the Jagger; I am dying to pair it with some sexy, pointy heels and a striking blazer - perfect for a night out! MadisonPark Collective is found at various stores around the world such as Ron Herman, Atrium NYC, Fred Segal, Traffic, Bloomingdales, Nordstrom and Saks! Looking forward to getting mine!

Styling for Spring Guide: Date Look

For the second edition to our "Styling for Spring" Guide, we've styled a Date Look, a necessary outfit during the time when love is in the air. According to stylist Bettina Bati, it's important to not over accessorize for this outfit because you want to seem approachable. A simple, bold piece is enough to stand out and not overwhelm your whole look. Skinny jeans and a flirty, lacey top is romantic and comfortable. We chose three different pairs of heels and thought they all match the outfit perfectly. So have fun with what you chose!

Mother's Day: Flower Care Tips from the Experts

Hope everyone had a wonderful Mother's Day weekend! Now that Mom got her flowers, here are some important tips on how to keep those flowers healthy and blooming!
  • Use plain, lukewarm water for most cut flowers, but use cold water for bulb flowers (daffodils, hyacinths and tulips)
  • Keep flowers out of direct sunlight
  • Move them to a cool place at night
  • Change the water every 2 days
  • Make a fresh cut each time you change the water
  • Give daffodils their own vase - daffodil stems give off a compound that is toxic to other flowers
  • Keep cut flowers away from fruit. Some fruits release a certain gas that causes flowers to age faster.

Here are some tips on selecting your Mother's Day flowers:
  • Flower stems should be green and smooth, not slimy
  • Water should smell fresh
  • No broken stems or drooping buds
  • Keep cut flowers cool until you can get them into water
  • Make a fresh cut an inch or two up the stem.
  • Cut with a sharp, non-serrated knife
  • Always make a cut on a slant, as it exposes more stem surface area
  • Make sure the vase and cuttiing tools are clean
  • Remove any leaves that will be below the water surface as leaves mold in water
  • Use the packet of flower food that come with your flowers.
    • Other alternatives to plant food are to add a penny in the vase or an aspirin tablet

Mother's Day: Wish your Mom Warmth & Longevity with this DIY Arrangement!

Sunflowers are a great choice for a Mother's Day arrangement. They are the happiest of flowers that represent loyalty, adoration, and longevity. We're going to show you how to put together a sunflower arrangment with a mix of other flowers we creatively chose! Feel free to use other flowers and other colors you think will be a great match for sunflowers.

At the Flower District, you will have to buy flowers in bundles, but the great thing is that you get to really stretch your dollar. We spent $30 for 6 bundles of flowers and were able to make 1 vase arrangement and 4 bouquets! This is a great way to give a lot of flowers to your loved ones without breaking the bank.

Here's what you'll need:
(from L to R)
Yellow wax (i.e. fillers)
White Snaps
Orange and red Gerbers
Sunflowers
White Irises

A vase! This arrangment will work in any shape and size, so be creative!

Tools:
Scissors
Ribbon

STEP 1:
Fill your vase with water and measure how tall you want your arrangement to stand. You will have to use the shortest stems as a reference.

Cut the stems to fit the desired height

STEP 2:
Using scissors, trim off all the leaves on every stem for a clean look

STEP 3:
Place each stem one-by-one into your vase and arrange it how you like.

STEP 4:
Put a bow on it!

& you're done!

And with the left over stems, we made 4 more bouquets out of it. Mother's Day isn't just limited to moms, but show your love to your grandma, aunts, and friend's moms too! Here we added purple carnations.
