The Factory Tour Hosted by Fashion Business Incorporated

Jennifer Evans, The Evans Group CEO, in her unrestricted work space in Downtown LA's Arts District

The Fashion Business Incorporated hosted the Factory Tour on Monday, July 25, 2011 to give an inside look at how designs are made through the development and production process. The tour took place at a fashion development and production house in Downtown’s Art District called The Factory by The Evans Group, which also operates one in San Francisco. Jennifer Evans, CEO of The Evans Group, believes in preserving domestic work, fair pay and social consciousness. As a result, Evans hires highly skilled workers – many of whom had lost their jobs as labor-intensive work was sourced overseas. The company caters to independent and emerging designers specializing in high-end designs. The Evans Group’s services range from making patterns and samples for the runway and showroom to filling small production orders without minimums.

The tour group at The Factory in Downtown LA's Arts District

During the tour, Jennifer described how her company develops and produces an idea into reality. First, she said, is the development process. At this time, Jennifer and her team of 30 employees work closely with the designer to make sure that the right ideas are communicated across the board. The designer is required to provide images of the final pieces, swatches, flat sketches and trims. Though many apparel manufacturers are looking to move their production overseas, The Evans Group is taking advantage of the need for local production. And this poses an advantage for those designers who are getting their clothing developed locally.

Pattern Maker, Gery Petrov, working at The Factory

“The benefits of domestic made is that the designer can pop over and work out kinks in the development process so that nothing is lost in translation,” said Jennifer. “There’s direct communication.”

Moreover, what’s interesting is that the made in the USA trend is not just in the US alone. Consumers abroad, such as in China and Japan, are hungry for “made in the USA” items too. One of The Factory’s clients is UnionMade, a Japanese brand that is actually making their collection in Los Angeles and then shipping them back to Japan to sell. Consumers there want and look for the "made in the USA" label.

“People abroad want items that are made in American because of the attention we put in our craftsmanship,” Jennifer further stated.
The next part is to give all of the materials and fabric to the pattern maker. Then, a fitting with a fit model is scheduled and the team can move into production.
In production, the team of highly-skilled craftsmen checks for quality, accuracy and trimming. Finally, the items are pressed and packaged either on hangers, folded or put in poly bags.

The entire process can take up to 4-6 weeks, depending on the collection volume. Orders can be only one piece to as many as 300 pieces per style. Additionally, given the variation of size and timing, the sewers at The Evans Group are specialized in specific textiles for efficiency and ensures that they finish the production on time.

And because each piece takes up a lot of time, Jennifer encourages people to appreciate the craftmanship and attention that went into making the pieces.

"A simple men's blazer, for example, can have up to 40 different patterns and it takes a team to put them all together," Jennifer concludes.

The Evans Group also offers a full-service package for start-up companies to launch their clothing line. Check out their Launch Programs page for development packages and pricing.

Dillard's Arrives in the LA Fashion District - Their Exclusive Location in Los Angeles!

Annemarie Dillard, the Director of Contemporary Sportswear, in the retailer's West Coast office
in the LA Fashion District's California Market Center

Los Angeles is synonymous with creativity and cutting edge fashion is one of them. That’s why Dillard’s West Coast has come to Los Angeles and set up shop in the LA Fashion District. The five-staffed team makes up the retailer’s West Coast only in-house trend office outside the company’s headquarters in Little Rock, Arkansas.
“We’re really in a unique position that no other department store is in. We’re in the thick of the LA Fashion District. With no brick and mortar store present, being here keeps us visible to the public,” says Annemarie Dillard, the granddaughter of Dillard’s founder and the daughter of the company’s president. The West Coast office recently opened in the California Market Center. Dillard’s twin sister, Alexandra, who is the divisional merchandising manager of private brands, is located on the opposite coast in St. Petersburg, Florida. “There’s a face to the name and allows us to know what’s going on just by being present.”
Established in 1938 by William T. Dillard, the retail giant now has 294 stores and 14 clearance centers in 29 states. Some of its locations include Texas, Florida, Arizona, Nevada, and Ohio. However, only three of those locations (Stockton, El Centro and Palmdale) are in California, albeit in relatively suburban areas.
California is essential in the contemporary and junior business,” says Dillard, who is the director of contemporary sportswear. “There are so many young, fashionable, hip people who have an entrepreneurial spirit and desire to bring new lines to the table.”
As a result, Dillard and her team are passionately on the search for untapped talent and new resources, such as vendors and manufacturers, for its private labels. Changing and updating their stores with fashion-forward merchandise provides a constantly competitive shopping experience for its customers. Dillard’s has also tapped quite a few vendors from the San Pedro Wholesale Mart. With their quick turn-around, the San Pedro Wholesale Mart has provided new inventories of California-trendy clothing to Dillard’s stores country wide that is keeping them competitive with other fast-fashion retailers. Moreover, most of the vendors they are purchasing from are located in showrooms in the LA Fashion District. The proximity to these showrooms has been a huge advantage.
Though she is responsible for the contemporary sportswear division, Dillard and her hard-working team are accountable for multiple projects. Because they work with a wide selection of products such as swimwear, cosmetics, apparel and shoes, each team member is very entrepreneurial and hands on. Some of their responsibilities include merchandising, personally meeting an array of vendors, managing private label accounts, and establishing a presence in the social media community through their blog and Facebook “The Fashion Files”.
“The Fashion Files” is Dillard’s fashion blog where Annemarie and Alexandra communicate directly with their customers in a very one-on-one approach.
“We use it as a platform to communicate in a language that she can relate to and through a medium (Facebook) that she is comfortable using,” says Dillard.
They regularly post outfits they spot on the street, give styling advice, feature brands that Dillard’s carries, highlight important silhouettes and trends, and host giveaways. They also post up video interviews between Annemarie and Alexandra where they casually talk about their favorite designers and trends, which make their brand much more relatable to their fans.
“Alexandra and I personally respond to all questions and comments on the blog and have given personalized fashion advice to many of our followers.”
Los Angeles and the LA Fashion District are a melting pot of artistic and fashion potential and Dillard’s is here to mine those opportunities. So, if you’re a designer or manufacturer, make an appointment and step through their doors – they want to meet you!

Made in the USA: True Collaborative Showroom

We recently gave you an inside look into True Collaborative showroom in the Cooper Design Space. But this time, we met with its owner, Tracey Forrest, who has been successful in translating her experience from the liquor industry to fashion. Coming from outside the industry, Tracey still uses similar skill sets in her showroom like creating a brand, instilling excitement in her sales team and getting to know her customers. However, one thing that is different is that she gets to represent five unique brands that are at the frontline of an emerging fashion trend - "made in the USA".

This topic was recently covered in the Los Angeles Times by fashion critic Booth Moore. Clothing made locally is quickly becoming a feature consumers are looking for. The public is more conscious of where things are made and are taking an initiative to purchase these items that will boost the economy. Additionally, companies are finding that they can produce here at home with only a minimal price difference to the cost of importing. On the manufacturing side, speed, quality control and cost-effectiveness are just some of the benefits.
For Tracey and her team, this trend and the shifting of the public’s mentality have created a niche for the brands they carry. Moreover, there is a bigger appreciation for the great craftsmanship that goes into each piece.
Prarie Underground

Prairie Underground is the showroom’s top selling line and is a favorite among working moms. Made in Seattle, the lifestyle, outerwear collection is a comfortable and functional line made with sustainable materials such as hemp and organic cotton. It is even packaged in recycled boxes. However, the line does not lose out on fashion. The silhouette and seaming of the jackets are figure-flattering and wearable for a night look once paired with stilettos.
Another brand is Pendleton. Founded in the 1800s and produced in Oregon, this company is known for its intricate patterns of Native American, 100% wool blankets inspired by ancient designs and legends.

Koch is another brand that is made in Dallas, Texas. A travel lifestyle brand, Koch is inspired by the bohemian style of La Jolla, CA and the glamour of Dallas, TX. They specialize in hand-printed, custom prints on luxurious, feminine fabrics.

SeaBags

Sea Bags, based in Maine, is a line of hand bags made from repurposed sail boats.

While True Collaborative is a strong advocate of brands that are made in the USA, they also appreciate and support well designed artisanal products that have a positive impact on the environment. For example, the fifth line they carry called Mady By is a collection of hand knitted sweaters, scarves and hats that have been made using a fair trade agreement. These pieces are knitted by skilled Peruvian women artisans who use alpaca wool which is environmentally friendly. The artisans receive fair wages and are highly skilled. They even sew their name on each of the items they make. This kind product is something that True Collaborative believes in and is still highly prized as a specialty good for boutiques and their customers.
