Want to get waxed downtown?

Jennifer and Amy at Wax Candy
Wax Candy opened for business last week making it the only salon specializing in waxing in downtown LA. They offer every waxing service from face to legs and everything in between.

“We wanted to create the kind of waxing salon where we would want to get waxed at,” said Wax Candy co-founder and owner Jennifer. “Wax Candy has a fun, relaxed atmosphere, where waxing is as painless as possible.”

Jennifer opened Wax Candy with three of her friends, all former co-workers. They each have at least five years of waxing experience.

“After working at a lot of different places, we realized there was really a need for a place in Downtown that specialized in waxing,” said Amy, fellow co-owner and founder. “We’ve seen full-service salons make mistakes waxing pros know not to do. We never double dip.”

Wax Candy prides itself on clean and sterile waxing practices. The wax is heated in one pot and poured into individual biodegradable cups, and the cup and stick are thrown away after each use. The also use high-quality, azulene wax with chamomile extract to help the wax better stick to the hair instead of the skin.

The salon has very competitive pricing ($25 for a bikini wax!), but perhaps the best part of Wax Candy is their super friendly staff. The girls are very knowledgeable and encouraging, and completely understanding of first-timers. Plus, first-time customers get a 10% discount.

Candy at Wax Candy! If you're good, they'll give you a lollipop ;)

Private waxing rooms- the girls built them themselves!

Walk-ins are welcome. Parking is street parking. There is also a lot directly across from the salon. Gift certificates are available. Wax Candy recommends waxing when hair is the length of a false eyelash. You can find more tips and tricks for waxing on their website.

LA Fashion District Fire Update

The LA Fashion District is open and will remain open as the Los Angeles Fire Department continues to investigate a fire that broke out near Maple Avenue and Olympic Boulevard early Sunday morning. Only the stores directly affected by the fire are closed off from the public. The stores in the surrounding area will remain open, including Santee Alley.

The right hand lane on Maple Avenue, near the intersection with Olympic Boulevard, was closed to traffic this morning. Fire trucks are parked in the area directly in front of the affected stores blocking the lane. The LA Fashion District Safe Team is in the area assisting LAFD and LAPD.

A fire was reported at around 2 a.m. on Sunday near Maple Avenue and Olympic Boulevard. About 150 firefighters responded to the scene. It is believed the fire may have started in the mezzanine area of one of the units, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

How to Shop Sample Sales

Shopping sample sales at the Fashion District can be a little overwhelming. We’ve already told you about parking and navigating buildings, but there are a few tips to keep in mind. Our sample sale veterans probably already know these, but if you’re new to the sample sale scene or a first timer the following tips are a must.

Do your research

There is over 1,200 showroom s in the Fashion District, and not all of them will be open to the public. Instead of running around from floor to floor, take some time to do a little research beforehand and figure out which showrooms will be having sales. You can find out about sample sales on this blog, our Facebook, Twitter, the Cooper Building’s Facebook and Twitter, and The California Market Center’s Facebook and Twitter. Each building will also have a bulletin board with sample sale flyers in their lobby. More often than not, showrooms will post their flyers last minute, so check to make sure you’re not missing out on some awesome sale that wasn’t advertised.

Available Sizes

Sample sizes are usually size 2 or 4, but that doesn’t mean those will be the only sizes available. Some showrooms carry size 6 or mediums, depending on the line, and many bring in overstock merchandise in all sizes to sell on sample sale days.

Bring cash but…

Most sample sales are cash only. However, paying in cash is not a green light to haggle. Though some showrooms might not mind cutting you a deal, most showrooms have set prices and merchandise will already be discounted 50-70% off retail price, if not more. Respect the set prices. The guys and gals working the showrooms are awesome, super friendly people and they might offer to give you extra discounts anyway… like when they don’t have change.

It’s OK to try before you buy

Showrooms don’t have fitting rooms but you can try clothes on anyway. Some prefer to do it in a corner; others do it in the middle of the showroom. While it’s not uncommon to see women stripping out of their clothes to try something on, we highly suggest you come prepared to avoid flashing your goodies to fellow shoppers. Wearing Spanx or lyrcra shorts under your clothes is totally acceptable. We also suggest wearing a layering tank and shoes that are easy to take off/put on. For those of you that don’t mind stripping naked in front of strangers, please remember to wear appropriate underwear.

Russell Brand stars in What About Dick? at the Orpheum Theatre

Ticket prices (all reserved seating)

$103 premium

$38 Rear Blac

6 ticket limit for all price levels. You can purchase tickets here.

About the Show:

Idle calls WHAT ABOUT DICK? an “Emotion Picture for Radio,” set between 1910 and eight o’clock, which tells the story of young Dick (Russell Brand) who is studying philosophy and gynecology at Oxford; his two cousins: Emma, (Jane Leeves) an emotionally retarded English girl; her kleptomaniac sister Helena (Sophie Winkleman) and their dipsomaniac Aunt Maggie (Tracey Ullman) all live together in Kensington in a large, rambling, Edwardian novel. When the Reverend Whoopsie (Tim Curry) discovers a piano on a beach, a plot is set afoot that can be solved only by a private Dick, the incomprehensible Scottish sleuth Inspector McGuffin (Billy Connolly) who with the aid of Sergeant Ken Russell (Jim Piddock) finally reveals the identity of the Houndsditch Mutilator.

John Du Prez plays the piano, and Eric Idle appears in his own play as The Narrator. The Grammy Award-winning duo who brought you SPAMALOT (which begins a run at The Pantages Theater February 28-March 3) and NOT THE MESSIAH (a comic oratorio performed at The Hollywood Bowl in 2009) have written eight new songs for the production.

The performance of What About Dick? is being videotaped for future telecasts and other exploitation at the producer's discretion and may include pictures of the audience or individuals in the audience. Attendance at this performance shall be deemed your consent to appear in such telecasts without compensation.
